This year, you can celebrate Earth Day in Baton Rouge by joining the Mississippi River Plastic Pollution Initiative and help scientists track where pollution is in your community.
Due to ongoing safety concerns around COVID-19, Louisiana Earth Day will not be holding an in-person event this year. We hope to back to our usual festivities in 2022!
Under the leadership of the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI), a new effort has been launched to generate a first-ever snapshot of plastic pollution along the river.
The Mississippi River Plastic Pollution Initiative is a collaborative between the United Nations Environment Programme, National Geographic Society, and the University of Georgia.
Through engaging citizen scientists, the initiative will generate a plastic pollution map to help local stakeholders including policy makers, businesses, and citizens take action. It is expected that data collection will then be expanded to many more sites along the river.
YOU can help by turning litter into data to #BeatPlasticPollution!
